In Kristoffer Borgli’s new A24 film ‘Dream Scenario,’ Nicolas Cage plays Paul Matthews, a man who keeps showing up in strangers’ dreams. Photo: A24Nobody goes to the movies for a message about the internet. So filmmaker Kristoffer Borgli wrapped his in a bizarro premise with plenty of comedy and a surprisingly apt character for lead actor Nicolas Cage. In the new “Dream Scenario,” recently released in theaters by A24, Cage plays an unremarkable guy who starts showing up inexplicably in others’ dreams, even those of far-flung strangers. It brings him a strange and unintentional fame, one that starts to sour as public perception shifts against the man making bedtime cameos in people’s minds.

CNN —Across the political spectrum, there’s a consensus that social media is dangerous. Director Kristoffer Borgli’s latest film, “Dream Scenario,” half builds on, half parodies those fears and anxieties for its absurdist plot. It also suggests, though, that the dynamics and dangers of online existence aren’t exactly new and aren’t exactly about social media at all. “Dream Scenario” is about how, even before we could see short hip hop dance videos on loop, we’ve always been in each other’s skulls. As “Dream Scenario” suggests, for better and worse, to be human is to dream together.

Nicolas Cage Photo: A24Whether sexy, sinister or surreal, dreams are . In “Dream Scenario,” fascination and boredom grapple for the upper hand in the tale of a college biology professor who is both unusually dull and yet nationally known. As played by Nicolas Cage in an amusing hangdog performance, the dull Boston academic Paul Matthews discovers that he’s popping up in his daughter’s dreams, as a character who just stands around while scary things happen. Like Byron, he becomes famous overnight, but unlike Byron, he has no talent. There isn’t anything special about him, except that he happens to be on everyone’s mind at the same time.

Nicolas Cage is not afraid to go big. “It’s not going to be the same old, same old.”But at some point, that bigness is exactly what audiences came to predict from him. Cage could sense that shift but felt powerless to stop it: How should a star react when the public’s changing perception starts to turn like a tidal wave? Cage sent up his persona by playing a heightened version of himself in last year’s “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent” but found even more to mine in “Dream Scenario,” which has its limited release next Friday. Still, once those collective dreams become nightmares, the hapless professor is helpless against the public backlash.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Plans by the Port of South Louisiana to purchase what was once a major New Orleans area shipyard for construction of military vessels have been delayed. The port announced in January its intent to purchase the old Avondale Shipyard site from the current owner, port terminal operator T. Parker Host. However, The Times-Picayune/The New Orleans Advocate reported Wednesday that the purchase has been put off after port officials faced questions last month from the state Bond Commission. Host bought the site in 2018, roughly four years after the shipyard that once employed thousands was shuttered. The proposed purchase would require more than $400 million in public financing.
